The idea for the product sprang from Davids memories of going out on the crayfish boats at Port Fairy as a teenager and then years later, working as an Art Director in Ireland, stacking up lobster pots for a film shoot in Donegal. The concept taps into Australia's rich coastal narrative, with further influences coming from sea urchins, indigenous fish traps & baskets. The organic sculptural contours also reference the work of British sculptors Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth & Anish Kapoor as well as Yellow Diva's ongoing fascination with wrapped form.
The radially symmetrical steel frame of the CrayPot ottoman creates a rigid hollow armature over which different thicknesses and colours of UV stable yacht rope are woven by hand to construct a tactile all-weather skin. The result is a unique aesthetic, a blending of the industrial and the artisan, giving rise to a fresh and innovative new genre of upholstered indoor / outdoor furniture.
The CrayPot range is equally suited to large atria, circulation spaces, retail environments, universities, libraries, galleries, resorts and hotels or public seating in parks or courtyards.
The interpretation of the design is adaptable and very much dependent on context. Considered in a relaxed resort setting the striped roping alludes to beach towels thrown over loungers; arranged casually outside a quayside bar they take on a nautical air; observed in a sophisticated retail environment they may be read as sartorial references, think Missoni or Chanel.
The steel frame is protected from corrosion by zinc plating before being powder coated. The manufacturing process allows components to be manufactured & assembled in batches and then woven to order in a choice of standard colour ways. Custom patterns / colours are options for large orders or special projects.
Complementing the ottomans is a chair and stool in low and bar height with optional low back.
