PRODUCT STORY

Halm

A seamless combination of timber and plastic. Where traditional craftsmanship meets innovative manufacturing technology. And there are two more things that meet: your body and perfect sitting comfort.

Winner of the Red Dot Award and Neocon Gold Award, 2017 – the all-rounder with a real sense of style and seamless combination of solid wood and innovative plastic gives the Halm design aesthetic unity resulting in an easy to clean seating solution. Its invisible square-tube frame makes every variation of Halm robust and long-lasting. Both the armed and armless versions are stackable adding space-saving as another valued feature.

The plastic seat and back are available in a choice of different colours. These can be harmoniously combined with the solid beech or oak frames featuring a natural finish or one of a number of stained finishes. Optional seat and backrest liners give added comfort. In its own discreetly elegant way, Halm excels in mastering all the challenges facing furniture in the cafeteria and restaurant sector as well as in the public waiting areas of the care sector.

The well-thought-out and unusual design proved enough to convince the international jury of experts at the world-renowned Red Dot Awards. Competing against manufacturers’ submissions from 54 countries, Halm was able to set itself apart in the Product Design category, granting it a year on display at the Red Dot Design Museum, the largest museum for contemporary design in the world.

Halm is also the proud recipient of a Gold Award from the renowned US design trade show, NeoCon. For almost 50 years, NeoCon in Chicago has been regarded as one of the world’s most important trade fairs for commercial design. Every year, more than 500 leading companies present their wares to around 50,000 trade visitors from the world of design. In the run-up to the trade show, a panel of judges comprising more than 40 architects, interior designers and facility managers assess the fair’s new products and awarded first and second prizes in 42 categories. Halm took the top prize in the ‘Seating: Stacking’ category. What impressed the judges were the “unusual and harmonious aspects of its design: its delicate, stacking composition features a mix of solid wood and plastic that is practically seamless. The result is an elegant chair that is particularly stable and easy to clean – ideal for the catering and care sectors.”

DESIGNER

Jehs + Laub

Stuttgart designers Markus Jehs and Jürgen Laub have been working together under the name of jehs+laub for more than 14 years. Their main focus of activity is on furniture, lamps and interior design. In 1992, they graduated as product design majors from the design university of applied sciences, the “hdpk” in Schwäbisch-Gmünd, a leading private university for the creative industries, and in 1994, they founded their design studio jehs+laub.

Asked about how the relationship between designer and manufacturer works, they reply: “It is like father and mother.” Next question: “And who’s the father?” Both: “The designer, of course!” Laub: “And the manufacturer is the mother. It is her who needs to incubate and develop, and finally the mutual child is born.”
